UNH Heads to #2 Boston College on Friday Night!

2009-11-20

UNH and BC will meet for the first time this season on Friday night at 7:00pm!

After dropping 2 of their last 3 games, UNH looks to fight back against the #2 ranked Boston College Eagles.

After an impressive 7-0 start to the season, UNH has hit its first skid of the season.  UNH dropped its first game of the year to UVM by a score of 3-2 at the Whittemore Center.

On Friday night, UNH travled to New Jersey to take on the Pioneers of William Patterson.  The first period saw UNH sitting back on their heels as they got a feel for the fast paced WPU team.  UNH played well at times, lead by Junior goalie Barry Driscoll.  UNH would surrender a goal with only 19 seconds left in the first period as a WPU player was able to go in on a breakaway and slide the puck past Driscoll for a 1-0 WPU lead going into the locker room.

In the second, UNH found themselves in the penalty box twice.  WPU would score on both power play chances.  UNH would pick up the play late in the second getting more shots and playing good defense.  UNH would find themselves down 3-0 after two periods of hockey.

UNH came out of the locker room with lots of energy and they would capitalize early.  1:38 into the second period, sophmore Shane Morin banged home a pass from senior Brian Agahigian to cut the WPU lead to 3-1.  Though UNH would battle hard in the third, it was not enough to overcome the late deficit.  WPU would add a late goal to lock up a 4-1 home win in their SECHL match-up vs UNH.

On Saturday night, UNH would travel down the road to Montclair State University for another SECHL match-up.  The game saw great goaltending, as both goalies would make great plays in the crease.  The first period was full of back and forth hockey as both teams peppered the opposing goalie with shots.  The two teams would both see powerplay time in the first, but neither team was able to capitalize, sending both teams into the locker room at a 0-0 deadlock after one.

MSU wasted no time in the second period as they scored only 35 seconds into the period.  UNH had a breakdown in their defensive zone that would lead to a MSU 1-0 lead early on.  UNH saw much power play time in the second, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net and went into the locker room down 1-0 after two.

UNH came out flying in the third period and would pick up their play.  with 9:01 left in the game, senior Brian Agahigian took a nice drop pass from linemate Chris MacArthur and fired a shot past the MSU goalie to tie the game at 1-1.  The two teams battled down the stretch and the game seemed destined for overtime.  With only 24 seconds remaining in regulation, freshman Derek Mumford found fellow freshman Mike Young in front of the MSU net and he hammered home the game winning goal.

With this win, UNH improves their overall record to 8-2-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in the SECHL.  UNH will travel to #2 Boston College on Friday night for a 7:00pm start.  Boston College currently holds an 11-1-2 overall record, losing their only game to William Patterson University.
