UNH Wins First SECHL Match-up VS Holy Cross and Defeats Bryant University

2009-10-28

Freshman Kyle Vandemoer posted 2 goals and 1 assist this past weekend vs Holy Cross and Bryant University

UNH won their first SECHL match-up VS Holy Cross on the road 2-1 on Friday night. Saturday, they defeated Bryant University 7-5 on home ice.

The UNH club hockey team faced-off against two long time rivals this past weekend, Holy Cross and Bryant University.  UNH won both games and improved their overall record to 5-0-0.

On Friday night, UNH travled to Holy Cross.  UNH would get on the board early as Chris MacArthur would put in a goal (assisted by Shawn Thompson and Kyle Vandemoer) 2:30 into the first frame putting UNH up 1-0.  The first period saw some physical play and great defense by both teams.  UNH would end the period up 1-0.

The second period saw no scoring, as both goalies would turn away all shots they saw.  Junior Barry Driscoll got his first start between the pipes for UNH.  UNH would lead 1-0 after the second period.

The third period saw more physical and fast-paced play from both teams.  Sophmore Mike Naylor would sneak a short side shot past the Holy Cross goalie (assisted by Steve Giangulio) putting UNH up 2-0 with only 2:32 remaining in regulation.  Holy Cross would pull their goalie and score with 1:32 left to play spoiling UNH's hopes for the shutout.  UNH would come out on top in the end with a hard fought 2-1 victory.

On Saturday afternoon, UNH played host to Bryant University at the Whittemore Center.  UNH showed some dominant play early on, but Bryant would battle back to keep it close.

Mike Naylor started the scoring for the wildcats with a nice one-timed goal in front of the net (assisted by Reid McCarthy and Shane Morin).  UNH would keep applying the pressure through the first period.  Reid McCarthy increased UNH's lead to 2-0 halfway through the first (assisted by Mike Naylor).

The second period saw both teams netting two goals of their own.  Kyle Vandemoer fought his way to the front of the net and put home a rebound to put UNH up 3-0 early in the second (assisted by Shawn Thompson and Mitch Granoff).  A little over five minutes later, freshman Brian Albertelli netted his frist goal of the season by showing nice patience with the puck and sliding a backhand shot underneath the Bryant goalie (Assised by Mitch Granoff and Shawn Olsten).  Lazy play by the UNH squad would allow Bryant to get back into the game late in the second period as they would score two late goals to cut the UNH lead to 4-2 going into the locker room.

The third period saw some good hockey as both teams kept plugging and would trade goals back and forth.  Bryant kicked off the scoring only 14 seconds into the third to make it a 4-3 UNH lead.  UNH was put on the powerplay moments later and Steve Giangulio would take a shot from the point that found its way to the back of the net (assisted by Brian Agahigian and Shane Morin) putting UNH back up by two goals.  Both teams scored two more goals in the later part of the third period, including goals from UNH's Kyle Vandemoer and Shane Morin.  The game ended in another UNH victory, 7-5.

UNH will host Western Connecticut State University on Friday night at the Whittemore Center at 6:00pm.  They will travel to Marist College on Saturday for another SECHL match-up.  Game time is 4:15.
